Concern about these letters began on Friday, July 17, when a letter was distributed to homes in Garran.

Police revealed on Wednesday that similar fliers had been distributed to houses in Watson on Tuesday, July 21.

The fliers included false claims people could catch coronavirus if they attended testing centres, that the virus could be spread through the water supply and that a future vaccine would be used to track people.

The commander of ACT Policing's COVID-19 Taskforce, Detective Superintendent Jason Kennedy, urged Canberrans to seek information about COVID-19 from reputable sources.

"The ACT government has a dedicated website containing extensive information for the public and a COVID-19 hotline (6207 7244) to address any concerns members of the community may have," he said.

"We are calling for any witnesses who may have seen someone in these areas distributing these letters."

"We urge residents in the Garran and Watson areas to check their CCTV or dash-cam footage for any video that may assist with this investigation."

When the letters first appeared, ACT Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith said they contained a conspiracy theory of "mammoth proportions" and were full of "far-fetched lies".

"It is very irresponsible to distribute this kind of material," she said at the time.

"This is dangerous misinformation and we absolutely condemn it."

ACT Policing are only aware of these letters being distributed in Garran and Watson, and asked anyone who received it elsewhere to report it.

The distribution of false or misleading information during a public health crisis may be considered an offense, falling under Acting With Intent to Cause Public Alarm in the ACT Crimes Act of 1900 (Section 140a).
