The teen was trapped in the cabin of his car, as it began to sink in the flooded Queanbeyan river.
"It started getting up near my neck ... I couldn't open the window. I took a breath of fresh air and then I was completely under water" he said.
Bob Beasley, 17, said from his Queanbeyan home, that is was a miracle he had not drowned. "another minute would have been it; the pressure kept the door shut, nothing went right." he said.
The boy had driven to look at the river after heavy rain, but the brakes on his Toyota Hilux had failed, and it's front wheels slid into the river.
"I couldn't do a thing," Bobby said. "I put it in reverse, but I couldn't get traction. Then it started going down."
Miraculously, the window had come loose as he had been running out of breath, and he had been able to climb on the back corner of his car before it had sunk beneath him, leaving him caught in the current.
He had held on to a log in the middle of the river until he was able to reach the shore. In shock, he walked to his girlfriend's house where he took a shower.
Later, when he returned to look for his car, police had arrived at the river after reports of a vehicle seen floating in the river. ACT and Queanbeyan police had combined forces in a joint rescue effort believing the vehicle could have had anywhere between one and four occupants. Thankfully, the car's only occupant, Bobby, had managed to escape unharmed.
