The works will be carried out at dog parks at Weston Creek and Tuggeranong, which will provide more grass, trees and an updated irrigation system.
The upgrades will take place from October and are expected to be complete by April 2021.
Parts of the dog parks will still be open to dog owners while the upgrades are taking place.
Murrumbidge MLA Bec Cody said the planned upgrades aimed at restoration work across both of the dog parks.
"We're looking to put in more native shrubs and trees as well as shade," Ms Cody said.
"We're going to be starting the work shortly because now is the best time to be planting grass.
"We'll be closing half the dog park off at a time, it will take a few months but it will be accessible."
The upgrades of the Weston Creek dog park, Canberra's newest dog park, comes just two years after it was opened to the public.
That dog park was announced as part of the 2016 ACT election and was opened in 2018.
Ms Cody said the surge in use for the dog park following its opening meant the grass was worn out quicker than originally planned.
"Unfortunately we all got a little bit excited when [Weston Creek] finally got the dog park," she said.
"The grass couldn't take hold as well as it should have and we're just doing some restoration work to fix that up.
"There was no irrigation at the Weston Creek dog park, and the grass died off because of the extreme heat we saw during the summer."
The work on the dog park comes as almost $2 million worth of upgrades will be undertaken at the Domestic Animal Services Shelter in Symonston.

Those upgrades will include 12 new dangerous dog kennels, which will minimise direct interaction with the dogs and handlers.
"The upgrades will ensure the facility is best equipped to continue caring for the hundreds of dogs that come through the shelter each year," Ms Cody said.
"Veterinarian spaces and food preparation areas have been refreshed and a backup generator and additional CCTV cameras have been installed for better security."
