Canberra was forecast to experience its coldest day in four years, as the temperature peaked at 7.5 degrees.
Although Canberra's temperature only dropped to 2.3 degrees Friday night, at 6.17am the apparent temperature was -5 degrees.
A strong cold front moving north across Victoria and NSW brought cold air up from Antarctica with showers, hail, thunder and snow expected for large parts of southern NSW across Saturday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.
Damaging winds were forecast for the Queanbeyan and Goulburn regions, throughout Saturday and Sunday.
Bureau of Meteorology duty forecaster Shuang Wang said the low pressure system, which had brought icy temperatures and snow to the Canberra region, would be replaced with warmer sunny days but frosty mornings heading into the new week.
"As the low pressure system is moving away to the east, a high pressure system is dominating the Canberra region, so morning frost for tomorrow morning followed by partly cloudy conditions," she said.
The minimum temperature forecast for Monday is -2 with a top of 11.
The frosty mornings are expected to continue until Thursday.
The temperature in the ACT climbed to 10 degrees on Sunday, and although the snow level had dropped to 800m, Ms Wang said it was unlikely Canberra would see any more flurries.
Snow would continue to fall west of the city, as the snowfields received another dump overnight.
Perisher reported another 25cm in the past 24 hours and Thredbo another 10cm.
A vigorous cold front across NSW crossing the state on Saturday had driven the cold weather, following several cold fronts through the week.
On Saturday, along Corin Road, families found plenty of snow to play through, with some getting their first chance to see the stuff.
Cassy Jewell went tobogganing in snow near the side of the road with her children Jude, 4, and Lukas, 7, who had never seen snow before.
"I think went at the perfect time because we went out there just as we were driving up to Corin Forset a big snow storm came, I think that's what obviously added to a lot of the fun," Ms Jewell said.
"That's the first time they've been to the snow. ... They were pretty excited."
Nine-month-old Quinnfe got to take her first snow steps on Saturday, with her parents, Margie and Nathan Young, helping her through the powder.
"It was beautiful, we enjoyed it," Mr Young said. "[The snow] was especially thick this year, I think."
Daytime temperatures are expected to warm up next week as a high pressure system brings much calmer conditions. However, overnight lows will remain chilly.
