1. Sweet as Sugerman
Lucy Sugerman is no stranger to the capital's stages. The Canberra singer-songwriter has been writing and playing songs for almost as long as she can remember. She captivated audiences across the country after appearing on The X-Factor in 2017, where she shared the stage with global superstars Seal and Katy Perry. But of course, the Channel Nine show was not the end of her music career and she has been performing ever since. Sugerman takes to the Blackbird stage this weekend and supported by local act Albert & Maria. Friday, 6pm.
2. Food meets fashion
Keep Trucking and Keep Strutting join forces this weekend with a two-for-one fair. Keep Trucking brings together local food trucks including Fares Beuller, Cannoli Brothers, Goodberries, Kombi Keg, Contentious Character and Sabi Beverages for a foodie fair like no other. Keep Strutting takes fashion lovers online with fashion runway with wedding, event, travel and lifestyle attire, Insta-style props, performers and special guest interviews. Saturday. Canberra College from 5-8pm and online at sidestage.live/keep-strutting/ from 6-7pm.
3. Throwback to the 80s
The first Eighties on Sunset show sold out at the Basement so they're putting on a second show this Saturday. Nothing quite beats music from the 80s. It was fun, it was loud, it didn't take itself too seriously and still encourages massive singalongs. The Basement is bringing it all back with music from all of your favourites. The only thing lacking is bad fashion and hair, but that you can always change that. Saturday, 7pm. Tickets are $43.60 from Oztix.
4. Drive on in
The UC Drive-in Cinema returns this weekend for four movie magic sessions. See The Hangover, Easy A, The LEGO Movie or The Hunger Games on the big screen from Thursday night. There will be a candy bar selling all your movie snacks including popcorn, drinks, chocolate and chips. Tickets are $45 per car or $30 for a UC student's car from Moshtix. Thursday to Sunday, various times.
5. I am singing in a room
Well, not me but Canberra's Nick Craft will be. His latest project, I am Singing in a Room, will see him do just that as part of the Where You Are Festival. But there's a twist. While Craft is singing he will record himself using a single microphone. That recording will then be immediately played back and recorded again via the same microphone. This process is repeated until the room's natural acoustics take over. What remains is a ghost of the original song is left in the air, words and melody blurring into an abstract soundscape. Saturday, 4pm. Gorman Arts Centre. Tickets are $15 from Eventbrite.
