ACT Education Minister Yvette Berry unveiled the name - Evelyn Scott School - at the Denman Prospect construction site on Friday morning. It is the first school in the ACT to be named after an Indigenous woman.
The name was chosen by the community via an ACT government survey. Members of the community could choose from five Aboriginal leaders known for their reform and activism.
Ms Berry said Dr Evelyn Scott was a standout choice from the 426 people who voted in the survey.
"Dr Evelyn Scott was a fantastic social justice campaigner for Indigenous people all across the country and it's really important here in the ACT that her work is recognised in our own contribution towards reconciliation," she said.
"Having Dr Evelyn Scott as the school name here in Denman Prospect is a really proud moment for the ACT."
The school's principal Jackie Vaughan spoke with Dr Evelyn Scott's family when the name was selected.
"It was my great privilege to inform Evelyn Scott's family that the new school in Molonglo will be named in her honour," she said.
"I am very excited to have the school named after such an inspirational trailblazer."
The school's uniform colour and emblem was also selected by the community. It will be blue and have an Australian Reed Warbler design.
The $47 million Evelyn Scott school will be open for the 2021 school year and will cater for 644 preschool to year 6 students.
The $23 million secondary school for year 7 to year 10 students is not set to open until 2023.
