Prince Henry Charles Albert David was born to Princess Diana and Prince Charles and joined big brother William. Henry, more commonly known now as Prince Harry, was born in a private wing at St Mary's Hospital in London.
After his arrival, Prince Charles came out to a cheering crowd and announced that the baby had pale blue eyes and hair of an indeterminate colour.
The Queen said she and the whole royal family were delighted. News of the birth was announced in the traditional way by being posted on the gates of Buckingham Palace and large crowds gathered to share in the celebrations.
Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke sent a private message extending "warmest congratulations from the people of Australia on the happy occasion of the birth of your new son".
Princess Diana was said to be doing well after a nine hour labour and Prince Charles was heard to tell one section of the excited crowd: "I'm going home to have a stiff drink".
