1. Game on
Does your idea of a good team sport involve four balls and brooms? Have you ever wanted to try your hand at being a chaser, beater, keeper or seeker? Well, this weekend is the ANU Quidditch Cup. Whether it's been a while since you played the Harry Potter-inspired game or have never tried it before, ANU is inviting anyone over the age of 16 to sign up for the tournament. Who knows? You may just take out the Quidditch Cup. Saturday, 10.30am-12.30pm. Fellows Oval, Australian National University. To register go to the ANU Owls Facebook page.
2. Shake it up
Tom Cruise can do it and you can too. 88mph is hosting a cocktail class that will have you shaking tumblers so well that if they ever remake Cocktail, you will be ready to offer your skills as an extra. The team will take you through three cocktails (that you get to drink as well) before you jump behind the bar and put your new skills to the test. After the class head to a booth and kick on for the evening. Saturday, 4.30pm. $50 per person. Bookings are essential at 88mph.bar/bookings/. There are also classes on October 10 and 17 and the option for private classes for more than five people.
3. In This Skin
This weekend sees the first iteration of In This Skin, a new work in development by Emma Hartley. The interactive fictional work looks into the ambiguities and silences of sexual violence narrative and navigates through identity, memory and social taboos. In your 30-minute session you will use a provided laptop to work through the game. Hartley will be on hand after you play to talk to you about your experience. Booking required between 12-2pm via Eventbrite. Walk-ins encouraged between 2-3pm. Belconnen Arts Centre.
4. On stage
Mahalia Barnes is no stranger to the stage. She's been in and around music her entire life. Her childhood was filled with a range of music from the likes of Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder and, of course, her dad Jimmy Barnes. All of that shaped her powerhouse soul and blues vocals, which she brings to the Royal Hotel this weekend. Saturday, 5.30pm and 8.30pm. Tickets are $89.80 from Oztix and include dinner and dessert.
5. Movie night
Treat yourself to a movie night when the drive-in cinema sets up in Queanbeyan. The weekend starts early with two movies - Red Dog and 47 Metres Down: Uncaged - kicking off three nights of film on Thursday. Friday night sees Spies in Disguise and Ford vs Ferrari take to the screen, while Jumanji: The Next Level and Ride Like a Girl are on the bill for Saturday. Food will be available on the night. Thursday-Saturday. 6pm and 8.30pm. Tickets are $29 per vehicle from Eventbrite.
