The island paradise was off limits to tourists for six months as a measure to safeguard against COVID-19.

Access to the community had been for essential services only but that all changed on Friday, October 2 when the island welcomed back tourists.

Eastern Tour Services director/owner David Bartush said they were thankful the island was again open to tourism travel after a six month lay-off.

"We are as happy as Larry it's open again," he said.

Eastern Tour Services is finding many people are choosing Lord Howe Island holidays as international travel is no longer an option.

Lord Howe Island is a bucket list destination.

"Our inquiry since the reopening was announced has been stronger than what I've seen in the last four years," Mr Bartush said.

He said the island's tourism reopening also brought benefits to Port Macquarie.

Mr Bartush said most of the customers from Eastern Tour Services stayed at Port Macquarie before and after their island holiday.

Lord Howe Island, located 600 kilometres east of Port Macquarie, is known for its natural attractions, clear waters and abundant bird life.

Only 400 visitors are able to stay on the island at any one time.

Mr Bartush said Eastern Tour Services had taken the opportunity to refresh and refocus during the island's temporary closure to tourism.
