An AFP agent's pistol, spare ammunition and other equipment were taken from a police car in Fraser last Wednesday, although ACT Policing have not revealed how the incident occured.
Acting Chief Police Officer Michael Chew told ABC Radio Canberra the investigation into the incident was ongoing.
"We are working very, very hard to try and locate that because any missing weapon ... is a concern for us," he said.
"So, we are working very hard and continuing to investigate and following a number of leads at the moment."
Commander Chew would not give any further detail when questioned about what stage the investigation was at or how the incident occured.
Commander Chew said the community should not be deterred from reporting crimes.
"Because we are such a safe community it makes it the exception not the norm when these sorts of things occur and people do get concerned aout their safety," he told ABC Radio Canberra.
"The message is we need to understand, but first of all we need to hear about it. Because if we don't hear about it we can't do something about it.
"Whether that's more patrols in those areas or whether that's some intelligence work around who may be committing those type of offences."
Commander Chew said police patrols had been increased in Weston following the fatal stabbing, and teams were "chasing" offenders behind a spate of commercial burglaries.
"The important message is that if you are a victim of a crime, report it. Report it to the police, you can report it on CrimeStoppers, you can report it on 131 444," he said.
"Being a smaller geographic region we will see spikes in crime rates and we will see spikes in various suburbs that are very distressing for those people in those suburbs.
"We are a safe city, but there's always going to be areas where spikes will occur. It's how we respond to those particular concerns and if people don't contact us we don't know their concerns."
