John Robert Griffiths, 38, targeted 99 victims from August 7, 2013, until shortly before his arrest by Wodonga detectives last year.
He advertised a range of property he didn't have, including DJ equipment, cameras and drones, on the online sales platform.
The victims transferred him money - including one transaction of $22,015 - which he used to fund his gambling problem.
The items were never sent, with the County Court on Thursday told he had deluded himself into thinking he would win big and be able to pay the victims back.
The court heard the North East man, who ran the scam from a bedroom in the Indigo Valley, had developed a gambling problem at age 19 after moving to Melbourne.
He used a range of bank accounts, email addresses, phone numbers and aliases during his offending.
Judge Gavan Meredith said Griffiths was remorseful but still had a long way to go as part of his rehabilitation.
He noted he had cooperated with police and had attempted to speak to them years before his arrest.
"I accept that you made some attempt to draw attention to yourself ... in the earlier part of 2013 .. however you did not follow through from this," he said.
"You had plenty of time to reflect on this and seek assistance to get this under control.
"I do accept that you essentially have nothing to show for your offending.
"Whilst your gambling may explain it, it does little to mitigate it."
The court heard Griffiths was morbidly obese at the time of the offending but had lost more than 30 kilograms in custody, which the judge said showed his motivation to change.
He has a string of priors for dishonesty offences and wasn't long out of jail in Western Australia for theft when he began the Gumtree offending.
He has two priors for obtaining financial advantage by deception in 2009, and in 2005.
Judge Meredith jailed Griffiths was for two years and 10 months with an 18-month minimum.
