The average temperature over the global land and ocean surface was 0.97 degrees Celsius above the average for the 20th century of 15 degrees, the NOAA said on Wednesday.
This means September 2020 surpassed the same months in 2015 and 2016, which were the climate monitor's previous record holders, by 0.02 degrees.
Countries in Europe, Asia and South America were among those that experienced particularly warm weather during the month.
The European Copernicus Climate Change Service has also said that last month was the warmest September it had recorded since it began its own records in 1979.
