The important media award earned Mr Pryor recognition on the front page of The Canberra Times.
Pryor won the award with an election-based cartoon showing a running race with Prime Minister Bob Hawke being carried at the front on the shoulders of his cabinet colleagues, while behind him Opposition Leader John Howard was the one carrying his team.
"I tried to find a metaphor to describe how the campaign had been run," he said.
"It encapsulated the whole thrust of the campaign as Hawke had run a team campaign and Howard had run it on his own while carrying everybody else."
It was Pryor's second Walkley. In 1980, he won the award for the best illustration.
Canberra born and married with four children, Pryor's career spanned 30 years from 1978 to 2008, generally contributing seven cartoons per week to The Canberra Times.
Pryor saw Bob Hawke's political career from beginning to end. Pryor's collection of cartoons are now located at the National Library.
Canberra-based freelance journalist Michael Boddy, also received a high commendation in the best feature story category for an article on AIDS testing.
