Public Sector Informant: Furore over Australia Post watches fails to bring meaningful focus on public sector pay

In calling for a review of Australia Post in light of its decision to reward some executives with Cartier watches, the prime minister stated that "there wouldn't be a board member of a government agency or a CEO of a government agency that didn't get my message". In the absence of any meaningful reflection on how public sector remuneration should be set, and by whom, it is hard not to suspect that the message is simply "don't cause me political embarrassment". The decision was silly, but the political reaction is confected given how many bonuses worth much more have been paid regularly for years.
