Police allege around five shots were fired at a Goyder Street home from a passing vehicle, about 2.40pm on Tuesday.
The man will face ACT Magistrate's Court on Wednesday on charges including threat to kill, act endangering life and damage property.
ACT Policing Chief Police Officer Neil Gaughan told ABC Radio Canberra on Wednesday the alleged offender had returned to the scene after the initial attack.
"Police were doing a door knock of the residents and the person came back and fired some more shots," he said.
"Subsequent to that the person is in custody and helping us with our inquiries."
He said it was likely related to a debt between the parties involved.
"In reassurance to the Canberra community it was a targeted attack, and there's no threat to public safety," he said.
Speaking to media on Tuesday, Detective Inspector Matt Reynolds said police had started searching for the suspect.
Detective Inspector Reynolds said the incident may have been related to a business transaction but "not necessarily a recognised business".
Two adults and a young child inside the home during the attack were not injured, police said.
More to come.
