The Australia Cycling Team have appointed the 38-year-old as their elite road coordinator on a part-time basis in Europe.
Sutherland retired from cycling following the Vuelta a Espana, where he rode for the Isreal Start-up Nation team.
It was a massive feat to race at a grand tour given he'd suffered an horrific broken leg about a year ago.
Australian Cycling Team performance director Simon Jones was looking forward to drawing on Sutherland's experience.
"Rory's focus in the short term will be to focus on maximising our medal chances for Tokyo and secondly contributing to our longer-term plans to sustain road success at major championships in the future," he said.
