Appearing on the front page of The Canberra Times was a photo of Mary Hession, in a sulky driven by Laurie Davis, about to collect mail from Charlie Miller, who flew from Canberra with it in his Tiger Moth.
Revving his Tiger Moth and he said "the mail must go through". Leaving Canberra Racecourse in a perfect takeoff, Mr Miller set course for the Bungendore Racecourse, about a 30-minute journey, where he delivered 4,000 commemorative envelopes, marking the 50th anniversary of the Tiger Moth and the International Year of the Disabled Persons.
The sale of the $2 envelopes would benefit the Blind Activities Centre and Koomarri.
The envelopes carried an illustration of the Tiger Moth, an IYDP stamp and Mr Miller's autograph. A former army pilot, Mr Miller had 35 years' flying experience.
He stopped flying in 1975 and then turned to taxi driving in Canberra. Mr Miller died recently aged 96.
