Yet, since The Canberra Times began publication in 1926 there hasn't been a year which encompasses 2020's almost biblical mix of pandemic, economic turmoil, fires, smoke, drought, and hail.
So instead, we bring you a story of pure joy from the front page of The Canberra Times on December 31, 1957 in the hope 2021 will bring similar relief.
A young girl was pictured "obviously enjoying the experience of walking in the rain".
"A scene similar to this, photographed in Civic Centre yesterday, has not been witnessed in Canberra for many long months of drought," the caption read.
While many people who "failed to don wet-weather rig" got soaked, the paper reported the downpour had likely broken the drought.
"The rain is expected to revive not only wilting, private gardens but to save many young trees and shrubs planted by the section," the article read.
"In the long dry spell there were losses of plants, principally those put in last winter."
"It is too early yet, however, to predict a lifting of the mild restrictions imposed on the use of sprinklers and other fixed watering devices."
The 1957 drought was not unprecedented or particularly exceptional, but the joy of it coming to an end is very relatable.
