ACT Attorney-General Shane Rattenbury on Tuesday announced Jane Campbell would start her role on January 11.
He said Ms Campbell, who was admitted to practice in 1990, was appointed following a competitive application process.
"Ms Campbell has significant experience working across a number of legal areas in her career and brings vast expertise in criminal law, which will be of particular value to the ACT Magistrates Court," Mr Rattenbury said.
"I would like to thank Ms Campbell for her commitment to this important appointment and I warmly welcome her to the role."
Ms Campbell's commission will be for 12 months, and help to support the courts while Magistrate Bernadette Boss is on a 12-month appointment as the interim National Commissioner for Defence and Veteran Suicide Prevention.
Dr Boss started that role in November last year.
Mr Rattenbury said Special Magistrate Margaret Hunter's contract had also been extended until April 30 this year.
He said Ms Campbell had served as a prosecutor for the ACT Director of Public Prosecutions, a human rights solicitor for the territory's women's legal centre, and had been a long-time member of the ACT Law Society's Criminal Law Committee.
Law society president Elizabeth Carroll on Tuesday congratulated Ms Campbell on her appointment as special magistrate.
"[She] brings a wealth of experience to the bench," Ms Carroll said.
