The man walked into the Alinga Street branch of the ANZ bank, withdrew the money then left without returning to the store. It was some time before the man's disappearance was apparent and then reported to police. Both ACT Police and Interstate Police were informed - and police did not discount that the man may have been abducted.
Meanwhile, featuring on the same page, 140 young cyclists attended the opening day of road safety classes. Organised by The Canberra Times and conducted by the ACT Police, classes were set to be held five times daily. Sergeant R. E. Littley said he was concerned at the number of children attending the classes who were riding bicycles that were too big for them. The young cyclists were taught road and road-safety rules before receiving practical training on the miniature road system at the centre.
More than 1600 children aged between seven and 14 were expected to attend the classes.
