* A woman who flew into Melbourne on Boxing Day tested positive for the highly contagious UK COVID-19 strain but 10 days later, while in hotel quarantine, was deemed no longer infectious and allowed to fly home to Queensland.

* Authorities fear the woman in her 20s was infected and active in the community from January 2. Victorian Health Minister Martin Foley says the medical clearance and release was in line with national protocols at the time.

* National cabinet has decided anyone who tests positive for the UK strain of the virus will now complete a full 14 days in hotel quarantine, even if symptom-free and no longer infectious.

* Despite all the concerns Queensland managed to make it through one day of lockdown without recording another locally-acquired case.

* Victoria now has 40 active cases, including a single new case recorded on Saturday in hotel quarantine. It is the state's third consecutive day without a locally-acquired case.

* Four Queenslanders have been hit with $1334 fines for failing to comply with the chief health officer's directions, including three who refused to wear a mask.

* Queensland authorities continue to stress supermarkets will remain open and panic buying is unnecessary.

* Fragments of COVID-19 have been detected in sewage at four more Queensland sites: South Brisbane, Townsville, Hervey Bay, Maryborough and Redcliffe.

* NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian says Australians should assume mutated COVID-19 variants emanating from the United Kingdom and South Africa will become the world's dominant strains due to their contagiousness.

* She also believes mask usage will be mandatory for the foreseeable future.

* NSW recorded one new locally-acquired case of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm on Friday.

* Suburbs north of Narrabeen Bridge on the northern beaches, meanwhile, have been under stay-at-home orders since before Christmas but that restriction is due to be lifted from Sunday.
