Officers were called to Moulden Court in Belconnen about 5am on Monday following reports of a suspicious vehicle seen on the street.
A man was found sleeping in the driver's seat while the engine was running.
Police arrested the man after an unsecure rifle was seen in the car.
A further search of the car also revealed a 12-gauge shotgun and several shotgun shells.
The man, who was on a good behaviour order, was charged with the unauthorised possession of a firearm, driving unlicensed, failing to comply with storage requirements and possessing ammunition.
He is expected to face court on the charges later this week.
