It means Vicki Linton's unbeaten charges will go from playing three matches in nine days, to nothing for the next two and a half weeks.
Their next scheduled match is against Melbourne Victory at Viking Park on January 24, although further changes to the W-League fixture are expected as the league tries to juggle the COVID-19 pandemic, and its ever changing health guidelines and border restrictions.
A league spokesperson said on Wednesday that postponing Canberra's clash with Newcastle was part of piecing together a workable draw for the remainder of the season.
The league did confirm the move was unrelated to Canberra's recent match in Brisbane, which forced Linton's players and staff into a three-day quarantine after returning to the ACT.
Young gun Grace Maher scored a late equaliser against the Brisbane Roar to extend Linton's record to two wins and a draw in her first three games in charge of the club.
"You take it for what it is and try and use it as the rest we needed," Linton said.
"Given the heaviness of the previous nine days it won't hurt us too much. We certainly needed rest, different players in different ways. It's a little bit difficult when you don't quite know what's going to happen."

Linton said the resilience in her squad had been exceptional already this season.
"I suppose as a coach and as a playing group we just want to be as open-minded and flexible as possible," Linton said.
"We'll just wait and see how that continues to get tested but so far it's been a very positive response. The effort the girls put in across the squad - we got a well deserved point away from home."
