There will be singing, dancing, waist drums, Taiji and martial arts performances in the Beijing Garden from 11am to 1pm on Australia Day, Tuesday January 26.

The Federation of Chinese Community of Canberra is organising the event and spokesperson Hao Gu said the Australia Day celebrations would "provide an important opportunity for the Chinese community of Canberra to reflect the challenges of the past year, to respect the sacrifices and contributions of those who responded at the time of need and to celebrate being together and being Australian".

"In the past year Australia has faced immense challenges - drought, bushfire, floods and the COVID-19 pandemic. The Chinese community members have worked with other fellow Australians to overcome the challenges," Mr Gu said

"The FCCCI organised donations among its members to donate for the bushfire volunteers who lost their lives to save others: Geoffrey Keaton, Andrew O'Dwyer and Samuel McPaul.

"We formed a mask-hunting task group to source masks worldwide and donated 10,000 surgical masks to the Canberra Hospital in June 2020. It was a timely help to support our frontline healthcare workers."

Mr Gu said the Chinese community appreciated "the resilience of our communities and the spirit of helping, giving and supporting that defines us as Australians".

The celebration will be conducted within COVID-safe guidelines.
