However, the stars aligned on Saturday as Williams made his debut for North Canberra-Gungahlin's first grade side against Weston Creek Molonglo, alongside good mate Lachlan Whatmough at Keith Tournier Memorial Oval.
It was Williams' first appearance in ACT Premier Cricket since 2019, where he turned out for ANU.
"Basically, the reason why you play sport most the time is because you have got mates playing and you enjoy the game," Williams said.
"I had a good mate in this side [Whatmough] and he gave me a buzz in the last week seeing if I was interested in having a game. We were free this afternoon, so it was nice to come down and have a game.
"I love my cricket. I just don't get much of an opportunity to play these days."
Despite Norths having the addition of Williams it would be Creek who would prevail, claiming an 87-run victory after a John Rogers' 98 off just 69 deliveries.
"He is a class bat [Rogers]," Williams said.
"You obviously see why he has played the level he has. He is an unbelievably clean striker of the ball. It is enjoyable being up front and watching these blokes bat."
Williams was run out for eight chasing the game in the latter stages and while disappointed, he said it was great to spend time with Whatmough in the middle.
"We were enjoying it out there until we needed some quick runs and I just like to run myself out," Williams said.
"It was a little bit disappointing but at that point in the game you need some quick runs, so it just happens in this format sometimes.
"We probably leaked a few more runs then what we would have liked but it was really enjoyable. The result is not ideal but as I said I play cricket because I love the sport, I love playing with my mates and it ticked all those boxes."
Williams has also appeared in two games of cricket in his home town of Cooma, playing for Coffeys Cricket Club.
He has not ruled out further appearances this season for either clubs if scheduling allowed.
Meanwhile, an Oliver Blaney-Brown century for Eastlake guided them to a 12-run-win over Queanbeyan.
The Demons helped set the Bluebags a target of 220 off their 50 overs, but three wickets apiece from Hayden Page and former Zimbabwean international Vusi Sibanda for Eastlake helped roll Queanbeyan for 207.
Tuggeranong claimed a 39-run win over Ginninderra, opener Nikesh Joseph top-scoring with 71.
Shane Devoy then backed his batsman with the ball, taking 4-27 as the Tigers were all out for 215.
ANU claimed a strong four-wicket win over Western District, chasing down the Lions' score of 258 in the 48th over.
Cameron Fox top-scored for the students with 82 not out, while Scott Murn hit an unbeaten 95 for Wests.
