Sams injured his right wrist after falling awkwardly with his body weight coming down on it during Monday night's loss to the Hobart Hurricanes in Canberra.
Now the Thunder are bound for Adelaide to round out their regular season with three major tests which will decide the club's finals fate.
The first assignment is a battle with the ladder-leading Sixers who have looked near impossible to stop before two clashes against the Adelaide Strikers on their home patch.
"It was his wrist. He was a bit sore actually, as you could probably tell," Thunder captain Callum Ferguson said.

"He went off the field, and in those circumstances you can come off and then come on to bowl again. As it was, I didn't need him to bowl his fourth over unfortunately. We'll assess him.
"The fact he was able to bowl again is a real positive looking forward for sure."
The Thunder will take any positives they can at the moment as a late-season slump threatens to knock them out of the top two finish they seemed destined for.
Six teams are vying for places ranging from second to seventh amid fear the Thunder could lose control of their fate.
"It's a tight table, it's a tough competition. We know that," Ferguson said.
"We're trying to make sure we're peaking at the right time of the tournament. We haven't been blown out of the water.
"Our losses have generally been games we were right in, unfortunately we weren't able to get the job done [on Monday night] which is disappointing.
"We've got some big games coming up, games we think we are more than capable of winning. We're really confident we'll get over the line, we'll get two or three wins out of those three games and be in really good shape going into the finals."
