Wright sustained bone bruising on his knee during training with scans revealing he is in danger of missing up to six weeks of action.
It is a cruel blow for the Brumbies as they edge closer to their lone Super Rugby rehearsal against the Western Force at Viking Park on Tuesday night.
"The timing of this injury is really unfortunate for Tom, he came back to the club in great shape and was looking forward to continuing where he left off last year," Brumbies coach Dan McKellar said.
"While it's extremely disappointing, Tom is the ultimate professional and is already doing everything he can with his rehab to make sure he's back on the field as soon as possible."

McKellar is poised to name Reesjan Pasitoa to start at flyhalf in the pre-season clash with newly-minted Test playmaker Noah Lolesio to come off the bench.
Lolesio will be eased into the contest in the wake of an enormous rookie season which saw him return from injury to guide the Brumbies to a domestic title in a tense grand final at Canberra Stadium and go on to make his Wallabies debut.
Perth product Pasitoa will pull on the No. 10 jersey as he looks to press his claims to deputise for Lolesio in the season proper, which begins in Perth on February 19.
Pasitoa has been jostling for a place in the Brumbies side with Lolesio and Bayley Kuenzle since arriving in Canberra, with the emerging prospect saying he has enjoyed more of a taste in the playmaking role at training throughout pre-season.
The Brumbies are likely to field a near full-strength outfit in Tuesday's trial but McKellar is expected to rotate plenty of troops in their only match before round one.
An injury to Wright, who scored nine tries in 13 appearances last year, means Andy Muirhead and Solomone Kata will be the front-runners to secure the wing spots for the Brumbies' round one clash with the Force.
It goes some way towards allaying the stress Muirhead says he felt last year when competition for spots was rife in the backline.
It meant Muirhead could play a blinder and find himself out of the XV the next week - but that doubles as the reason the Brumbies enjoyed Super Rugby AU glory.
"It definitely is tough, it can be quite stressful at times if I'm going to be honest," Muirhead said.
"That's just part of the game, it makes you want to train harder. You know if you play a good game on the weekend then you still want to get picked for the next game so you need to keep training hard.
"That's what we've been doing well down here, keeping everyone accountable and honest with performances.
"It always seems to be tough every week when selection comes because you never know if you're going to get picked or not because everyone is performing.
"We've always got good outside back down here, and obviously have an opportunity next week to put our hands up and try to play round one.
"I definitely feel comfortable on the wing now. I've got my head around it a lot more now. I used to dabble a bit in fullback, I've done a fair bit of pre-season at fullback and I did really enjoy that, but definitely, wing is very comfortable to play.
"Every season is different and brings different challenges, but definitely looking forward to trying to put my hand up a lot more this year and trying to get a lot more involvements within the team.
"Everyone knows their role, I know my role and what I need to do to make the team perform well, so hopefully I can lock down on that."
