From Friday, February 12, when the Year of the Ox begins, there is plenty happening, from gourmet feasts to lion dancing, and more.
Republic Precinct, Belconnen
Grazier Lane at the Republic Precinct comes to life with the vibrant sights, tastes and sounds of Asia. There'll be street-food stalls, live music, dragon dancing and plenty of family fun. There will be a vibrant display including a tunnel of traditional lanterns and glowing lights will turn the precinct an Insta-worthy crimson.
Brought to you by Geocon, there will also be self-led tours of the recently completed amenities such as the infinity pool, gym, residents cinema, chef's kitchen, wine cellar and Skypark. There will be prizes to be won on the day including No.10 dining vouchers, Abode hotel staycation packages and referral gifts.
XO, Narrabundah
Always one of their most popular events of the year, the Narrabundah restaurant serves up a traditional eight-course meal, with a distinctive Australian twist.
The menu includes siu mai - a dish of lobster, beluga caviar and koon yick chilli sauce - as well as the traditional longevity noodles, with tang hoon, beansprouts and garlic chives. The longer the noodle the better.
Cost is $88pp. There will also be a lion dancing performance on February 12.
Ginseng, Woden
We love it that one of the best celebrations is at the Hellenic Club.
Ginseng's yum cha is one of the best in town and for Lunar New Year they throw in lion dancers at 11.30am and 1.15pm for good measure.
If you miss out on the lion dancers, there's another in the main foyer at 4pm. In the restaurant there's a banquet available from February 11, nine courses for $78pp.
There are also some specials available during New Year, try the traditional festival dish "poon choi", eight lucky ingredients served in a pot: pork belly, scallops, king prawns, duck, chick, radish, mushroom and broccoli.
Labour Club, Belconnen
Celebrations at the Labour Club include a special dinner served in the Alfresco bistro on February 12. Expect some old favourites such as san choy bao, Peking duck and fried king prawns. $48pp. They will also be lion dancers every evening from February 12 to 14 at 6.30pm.
Natural Nine, City
Join in the festivities as Casino Canberra ushers in the Lunar New Year in style across three big days.
There'll be a lion dance on February 12, as well as low limits on the gaming tables.
But the highlight is the banquet at Natural Nine. There's a 10-course menu and a two-hour beverage package.
Think fragrant fried eggplant, pork and pickled cabbage dumplings, char sui pork belly, barramundi with shitake braised clam and asparagus with a fried salted red bean caramel ice cream to finish.
Cost is $115pp, for over 18s.
Sakyamuni Buddhist Centre, Lyneham
The celebrations kick off early on Thursday, February 11, from 6pm until late.
The centre comes alive with gourmet vegetarian food stalls, prayers, speeches and cultural performances including lion dancers.
Admission is free and all are welcome.
February 11, from 6pm.
Canberra Centre, City
There will be roaming lion dancers in the centre on February 13, starting in City Walk at 11am.
Plenty of time then to hit the shops and find somewhere fitting for lunch.
Some stores have special promotions in place including Pandora, L'Occitane, Les Nereides and Superdry.
Lantern Festival, Lennox Gardens
This popular event features performances of Chinese music, dancing and martial arts.
The highlight is the lantern parade; bring your own or some will be available for sale.
Hosted by the Australia China Friendship Group, the event will adhere to COVID guidelines, weather permitting.
Lanterne Rooms, Campbell
Valentine's Day mixed with Lunar New Year. Try the early love bird's menu at 6pm for $78pp. Or the tasting menu at 7.30pm for $98pp. Think tom yum infused prawns with rockmelon and apple, pork and prawn dumplings with aromatic seafood broth and slow-cooked Penang style beef short rib with wood ear mushrooms.
Chairman and Yip, Barton
Love is in the air at Chairman as well. The Valentine's Day five-course early lovebird session ends with a "Taste of romance" dessert featuring raspberry sorbet, chocolate and rum jelly. $78pp. The seven-course degustation features charred pork belly, rose jam, jerusalem artichoke and Hong Kong typhoon shelters style prawns with garlic and chill. $98pp. Wine matching available, $45pp for six half glasses.
