With coronavirus supplements scheduled to end in March, the government is considering a permanent increase to the dole.

One option being considered is boosting the JobSeeker payment and streamlining a range of supplements.

The recommendation stems from a report provided to the federal government in 2015, which argued jobless Australians needed enough money to survive while looking for work.

Treasurer Josh Frydenberg refused to be drawn on the streamlining idea.

"I'm not going to speculate on speculation," he told ABC radio on Monday.

A decision on what might replace the $150 per fortnight pandemic payment will be made by the end of March.

"In terms of the rate and its future, we will consider that in the normal expenditure review committee process, and that's what we're doing right now," Mr Frydenberg said.

Nationals deputy leader David Littleproud indicated the decision would be made sooner rather than later, with the deadline just six weeks away.

"Obviously we're coming very close to a solution about what that'll look like," he told reporters at Parliament House.

The government has been warned reducing the JobSeeker dole payment will result in a national crisis.

Anglicare Australia polled service agencies across the country and 100 per cent of respondents said any cut would see more people needing help.

"The old rate of JobSeeker was frozen for decades, leaving hundreds of thousands of people trapped in poverty," executive director Kasy Chambers said.

"When the government raised the rate last year, it righted that wrong."

Last April, the introduction of the coronavirus supplement effectively doubled the rate of JobSeeker to $557.85 per week.

The supplement was cut in September, leaving JobSeeker recipients with $407.85 per week, and that was reduced again in December to $357.85 per week.

Unless the government intervenes, the dole will return to $40 a day from the end of March.

Ms Chambers said the supplement lifted people out of poverty overnight.

"Our clients told us they could finally feed their families, pay the rent and plan for their future without making devastating trade-offs," she said.

"Cuts will undo all of that work."

The JobKeeper wage subsidy scheme is also due to end in March.

"With wage subsidies coming to an end, more people will be surviving on JobSeeker," she said.

"A cut in March will plunge them into poverty at a time when they should be planning their recovery."
