But for now he'll have to keep explaining how a mad Canberra Raiders fan, and close family friend to the McIntyres - who are entwined in Green Machine history - ended up with a horse named after Parramatta Eels captain Clint Gutherson.

Well, Cleary's wife Sharlene is a massive Eels fan - not to mention an admirer of Gutherson, aka King Gutho - and she named the horse.

Sharlene decided the dad's name, Better Than Ready, and the mum's, Magic Model, came together to describe the Parramatta custodian perfectly.

But there could soon be even more NRL rivalry galloping around the Cleary stables.

He bought a yearling at the Magic Millions sales in January which has picked up the nickname "Charnzey", after Raiders fullback Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad.

Cleary was hoping he might be able to get King Gutho and his namesake together when the Eels play at Canberra Stadium in round six.

"I've been a passionate Canberra Raiders supporter and I definitely think I was at the first ever game at Seiffert Oval in 1982," he said.

"But my wife Sharlene is a mad Parramatta supporter and she's got an infatuation with Clint Gutherson.

"The horse is by Better Than Ready out of a mare called Magic Model so she named him King Gutho.

"But we did buy a horse out of the Magic Millions and I've already nicknamed him Charnzey.

"So we might have King Charnzey and King Gutho."

But for now, King Gutho's ruling the roost.

He's one of Cleary's two main chances at Queanbeyan on Monday, running in the class 1 handicap (1000 metres), while Bring It Bella will jump in the maiden handicap (1460m).

A good run could see the latter line up in the listed Canberra Guineas (1400m) on March 8, while King Gutho could head to the group 3 Black Opal Stakes (1200m) the day before.

But Cleary felt it could be a tough Black Opal field this year and he would likely run in the $500,000 QTIS Jewel (1200m) on the Gold Coast on March 13.

"He's either going to head towards the Black Opal or he'll head to the Gold Coast on March 13 for a $500,000 QTIS Jewel for two-year-olds," he said.

"I really think the Black Opal is going to be a strong race this year and not every day a two-year-old can race for half a million against [Queensland Thoroughbred Incentive Scheme] horses.

"I dare say I'll lean towards that race on March 13. [Monday] will be a nice little top-up for him."

Cleary got Bring It Bella from the Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young stable in Victoria and this will be her first run for him.

He felt the three-year-old filly had plenty of promise.

"She's a nice filly and she looks like she's in the right race to get away with it," Cleary said.

"If she wins she may go round in the Canberra Guineas."

Cleary also has Endymion, Casa de Reign, Disconcerted, Bouris and Fell's Hero running at Queanbeyan on Monday.
