Country Party candidate for the state seat of Monaro Keith Phillis told The Canberra Times 56 years ago Queanbeyan shopkeepers should be permitted to trade on Friday nights.
The Queanbeyan Chamber of Commerce should make strong representation for late night shopping in its next meeting, Mr Phillis said.
The candidate argued the shopkeepers' loss of business because of late night trading in the ACT must be extensive.
Meanwhile, the Times reported Canberra homes would begin receiving only one mail delivery per day, with restrictions to deliveries in all residential areas serviced by Canberra post offices announced.
Twice-daily deliveries would continue to Kingston, Manuka, Braddon and Barton shopping areas.
Also on this day, a central X-ray unit began operating in Garema Place, a five-storey extension to the Canberra Rex Hotel was nearing completion and car thieves were having an incredibly easy time in the Red Hill and Narrabundah areas.
It was reported one Red Hill resident's sedan, loaded with parcels, was removed from his driveway and returned a few hours later.
The parcels were left in the vehicle but were re-arranged.
