Hosted by the Red Cross, the ball was hosted at the Canberra Rex Hotel. Miss Belinda Fingleton, 20, of Forrest had won the prestigious crown.
The 380 guests applauded loudly as president of Canberra Red Cross Lady Oliver announced Belinda as the winner.
Belinda won from four other finalists, who were selected from 26 girls who entered the quest. Belinda was the most popular winner.
Belinda's win culminated hundreds of hours of fundraising work for charity. The 25 girls in the quest raised almost $10000, of which Belinda's contribution was $300.
Belinda received $360 and a gold watch.
Many members of the Canberra Yacht Club, which sponsored Belinda, were among the guests and applauded her as she rose to dance the first waltz.
Lady Oliver said all the girls deserved congratulations for their wonderful achievement in raising so much money for various charities.
The president of the Canberra Day 1963 Citizens' Celebrations Committee, Mr T. Pye, praised all concerned with the princess competition.
