Four people became trapped when the blue Holden Statesman sedan they were travelling in hit a median strip and a tree after a collision with a Nissan Juke, also travelling south. The 47-year-old female driver of the Holden Statesman died at the scene.
Emergency services attended the crash at the southbound lanes on the M1 Princes Highway at Figtree, near the Masters Road off-ramp, about 7.15pm.
The three passengers of the Holden were airlifted to Westmead Hospital. The 15-year-old female was in a critical condition and two boys, aged five and 10, were described as stable.
The 29-year-old female driver of the Nissan Juke and her 32-year-old male passenger were uninjured. The driver was taken to Wollongong Hospital for mandatory testing.
Officers from Wollongong Police District attended the scene and commenced an investigation into the circumstances of the crash.
Traffic on both sides of the freeway was diverted as rescue efforts took place. Southbound traffic diversions continued into the night as officers from the Crash Investigation Unit examined the scene.
As inquiries continue, police have appealed to any witnesses to the crash or anyone who might have dash cam footage to contact police.
