Police allege Sugimatatihuna Bernard Gabriel Mena, 22, shot the injured man at a home in the Belconnen suburb of Spence during the early hours of March 11.

In a statement, ACT Policing said officers had begun investigating the incident after the victim presented to Calvary Hospital with serious gunshot wounds.

Police said they had found several items of interest, including shell casings, during a search conducted later on the day in question.

Investigators subsequently arrested Mr Mena, of Bonner, on Monday.

The 22-year-old appeared briefly in the ACT Magistrates Court on Tuesday, charged with intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm and two counts of discharging a firearm in circumstances that endangered life.

The gun in question was described as a sawn-off .22 rifle.

Mr Mena did not enter any pleas or apply for bail on Tuesday, though the court heard he would probably make an application soon.

Magistrate James Lawton remanded the 22-year-old in custody until his next scheduled appearance on April 13.

Speaking after Mr Mena's court appearance, Detective Inspector Marcus Boorman said two more people were "assisting [police] with our enquiries" into the incident.

"I would suggest that further charges may be laid," he said.

Detective Inspector Boorman told media the victim had arrived at Calvary Hospital with "significant" injuries that initially had him in "a critical and unstable condition".

"The victim received one gunshot wound to the abdomen and a number of other gunshot wounds, but I won't go into the specifics of those," he said.

The senior detective declined to comment on any suspected motive for the shooting, saying the investigation was ongoing and the matter was now before the courts.

He did say that "the parties were known to police".
