Unfortunately, for three of them, they were unable to survive because of cold and dampness.
The six pups were among 10, discovered in the drain under Allara Street in Civic.
An SPCA inspector, a policeman, two dog patrol men and four men from the stormwater maintenance section of the Department of the Capital Territory, took three hours to rescue the pups.
Three had already deceased and one was destroyed by the SPCA because it was too sick to recover without its mother.
The dog patrol men tried unsuccessfully to capture the mother who had given birth to them in the drain.
Being very wary of strangers, she stayed clear of everyone. The SPCA inspector, Mr Alan Sims, asked anybody who knew the pup owner, or who had a dog which could possibly provide for the pups to contact the SPCA Cotter refuge.
Mr Sims said the pups were to be fed every three hours with an eye dropper.
