1. Skywhales
It's your last chance to see our favourite Skywhale family float across our skies on April 3. Patricia Piccinini's Skywhale and Skywhalepapa have mesmerised us, the Every Heart Sings project making us all think a little more about family. Weather permitting they'll take off from John Dunmore Lang Place in Parkes at 5.30am. Make a day of it and head to the National Gallery of Australia afterwards for Botticelli to Van Gogh, from 10am, and then indulge in the new Sunflowers High Tea, where chef Samuel McCarthy has taken inspiration from the exhibition and produced a delectable offering of sweet and savoury. Served every Friday to Sunday during the exhibition on the lower ground floor. From $60. nga.gov.au
2. Egg hunts
How anyone will manage a socially distanced egg hunt, only the Easter bunny knows. At Corin Forest, people who book for Corin's alpine slide or snowplay or both from April 2-5 will get a free bag of Easter eggs for people to set up their own socially-distanced hunt. Tickets are limited so book at corin.com.au/easter. At South.Point in Tuggeranong there'll be an Easter themed scavenger hunt on April 4, find all the bunnies for a prize. Details at southpointcanberra.com.au. And out at Spence, Saint Paul's Ginninderra Anglican Church will host the Mt Rogers Community Centre egg hunt from 10.30am following the Easter Sunday family service.
3. Good Folk
If you need a fix of folk even though the National Folk Festival has been cancelled, head out to Queanbeyan for Good Folk. The two-day event will run at three venues, The Q, Bicentennial Hall, and the Royal Hotel, with 22 different concerts. Don't miss Fanny Lumsden, Little Quirks or Queanbeyan's very own esteemed author and rapper, Omar Musa.
4. Poetic City
And if you're missing the poetry component of the NFF head into Haig Park on April 3, from 10am for an open mic breakfast with performance poet and writer Robyn Sykes. Sykes is the host of Binalong's popular A Brush with Poetry and afterwards she'll run a workshop entitled "Cryptic Crosswords: juggling practice for poets to learn how cryptic crosswords can pump energy into your writing". poeticcitycbr.com
5. Fish and chips
A tradition that many of us follow, whether for religious reasons or not: fish and chips on Good Friday. At Contentious Character choose from beer-battered flathead with hand-cut chips; salt and native pepperberry squid with garlic aioli; roast barramundi with fresh tomato salsa; and the classic prawn cocktail. On Easter Sunday there's also an egg hunt around the vineyard, followed by pizza, pasta or fish and chips for lunch. contentiouscharacter.com.au
