But, in good news for the Canberra Raiders, Hudson Young and their two concussion cases will line up in their crucial clash against the Gold Coast Titans at Kogarah Park on Saturday.
The Raiders' loss to the New Zealand Warriors means the Titans game carries extra weight - given they then travel to Penrith to face the unbeaten Panthers the following week and then host Parramatta.
Both Ryan James and Sebastian Kris have passed their concussion protocols and will be available to travel to Sydney.
Young will return after missing one week with a knee injury and has the important job of marking up on Titans gun David Fifita.
"The guys who suffered the head knocks last week have been cleared to play, which is good news," Stuart said.
"Unfortunate news with Curtis and Joe Taps, but they're probably a couple of weeks away from being cleared. We've got to be playing it safe so early in the season.
"[Young] was very close last week, but [we were] protecting Hudson from wanting to play when he was not 100 per cent fit.
"It was a little too much of a risk because I didn't want him to reinjure it and then be a longer period on the sidelines. One week out, got him back to play this week."
MORE RAIDERS NEWS
Stuart challenged his reserve-grade players to be better after they were thrashed by Mounties in the NSW Cup last week.
With the exception of Dunamis Lui, who returned to the NRL side to cover the loss of Tapine, Stuart wanted more from those players.
Lui spent just one week in the reserves, where he played 74 minutes, made 37 tackles and ran for 84 metres.
"The players in NSW Cup have to be better," Stuart said.
"We played very poorly last week in NSW Cup and they have to show some responsibility there to aim up and play well to force their way back into the top squad.
"Dunamis Lui did that. Dunamis comes back into the squad for Joey Tapine. We've trained well and we've had a pretty good week of preparation."
Part of that involved a lighter start to the week on the training track - to allow the players to recover from a taxing encounter against the Warriors where they only had 14 fit players for most of the game.
Stuart said the change in travel plans due to the Brisbane COVID-19 outbreak - from flying to the Gold Coast on Thursday to bussing up to Sydney a day later - wouldn't affect the team.
The Raiders mentor was wary of an improved Titans, especially offensively - they're currently the fourth best attack, albeit after just three rounds.
"They're another big team. They've got some big, wide runners. They're a very good attacking team," Stuart said.
"A lot of speed, so defensively we've got to be up and we've got to score our amount of points.
"I was very happy with our attack last week. I thought we attacked very well. We stuck to a solid plan, but we've got to tighten up our defence a little bit.
"Last week there was certainly an excuse with the amount of fatigue we had with the unique scenario of only having one player left [on the bench] after 13 minutes."
