John's teachers were The Beatles. As a teenager he learned their songs by ear and, without them knowing it, they taught him about keys and time signatures, scales and modes, chords and harmony.
Since then he's composed, arranged and performed his way through 50 years of professional music-making, these days as half of cabaret act Shortis and Simpson.

Now he's passing on his knowledge to the next generation, coming up with a four-week course full of stories, humour, context, chord wheels and patterns.
The course will be held at the Ainslie Arts Centre, 30 Elouera Street, Braddon.
It will be held on consecutive Wednesdays from 7pm to 9pm starting April 28. The cost is $80.
