From Friday, a curfew is being imposed on the greater Buenos Aires area between 8pm and 6am, President Alberto Fernandez announced on Wednesday.
The only exceptions will be for workers in essential sectors.
All social, sporting, cultural and religious events held indoors are prohibited.
Schools and kindergartens are closed until the end of April.
About 14.8 million people live in the metropolitan region of Buenos Aires. This corresponds to about 37 per cent of the total population of the South American country.
More than 27,000 new cases were registered on Tuesday, the highest level since the pandemic started about a year ago.
On Wednesday, the health ministry reported 368 COVID-related deaths - the highest number since mid-January.
About 2.6 million people in Argentina have been infected with the coronavirus, and more than 58,500 patients have died.
