Sugimatatihuna Mena fronted the ACT Magistrates Court on Friday via telephone where he was hit with the upgraded charge.
He was also charged with aggravated burglary over the violent home invasion on March 11.
The 22-year-old was already in custody over the shooting and has previously been charged with intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm and two counts of discharging a firearm in circumstances that endangered life.
It's alleged he used a sawn-off .22 rifle.
Mr Mena has not entered pleas.
Police have earlier said that the victim turned up to Calvary Hospital with "significant" gunshot wounds, including to his abdomen.
At the time he was in "a critical and unstable condition".
Investigators recovered shell casings and other items of interest when they raided the home later that day.
They have not revealed any suspected motive.
Another man, Bradley Joe Roberts, 22, is also in custody accused of committing the home invasion with Mr Mena.
Mr Roberts has pleaded not guilty to the charge.
Mr Mena, of Gungahlin, is not legally represented after sacking his lawyers, the court heard.
He will appear again at a later date.
