The way we live and work has certainly changed amid a global pandemic, and the effects have been felt in every workplace in Canberra.
At the helm of managing this change are leaders who have been challenged to facilitate a shift to remote working, while ensuring continued productivity within teams working between the office and home.
Certified leadership coach, Kim Vella, says it has been a difficult year for many people, but particularly overwhelming for the leaders who are unsure how to transition their leadership approach.
"Many organisations are embracing and embedding remote working and flexible workplace arrangements into their culture," says Kim.
"So the ability to cultivate engaged and high functioning teams that aren't always co-located is now a vital and valued skill," she continued.
"Trying to approach this change with a traditional leadership approach will make it difficult for some people to be effective or competitive for promotions.
"In my work as a leadership coach, particularly within the public sector, I've found this is most impacting highly technical leaders," Kim explained.
"While they're at the top of their game professionally, they've never had to learn leadership skills which are proven to enable trust and collaboration."
Kim says she is now seeing organisations being prepared to reposition even highly regarded leaders if their approach isn't sustainable and aligned to the modern workplace.
"It's very stressful for these leaders because they aren't sure where they're going wrong. In working with them individually, and with their teams, we have had some exciting breakthroughs, from reimagining the benefits of peer feedback to developing a solid plan to lead with confidence.
"It's a real challenge, like climbing Everest, but very rewarding once you get there.
"Learning these skills is very personally rewarding, and can make all the difference to employability and promotion in a post-pandemic era."
