Management and leadership are not quite the same thing

Ask yourself this. Are you as effective as you want to be, or in fact need to be, in your current leadership role?

In a prepared speech that former US president John F Kennedy never quite got the chance to give in Dallas, Texas, he would have said the phrase "leadership and learning are indispensable to each other".

The point being that we should never stop learning, no matter how far up the hierarchy we have ascended.

Also of interest, a Grovo study in the USA revealed that "mid-level managers said more than two out of five of their company's managers, on average, were unprepared for management when they assumed their role, and that less than half of managers are highly effective".

Further, that study also found that a staggering 87 percent of middle managers "wished they had received more management training when they first became a manager."

Canberra-based business Black Bull Performance Group say the numbers in Australia aren't much different. The group also says that they are leading the charge in creating functional leaders not only in Australia, but internationally as well.

One key distinction they illustrate is that between leading and managing.

They say you can be a manager, yet not be a leader. And at the same time, not every leader is a manager.

"Management is about motivation - motivation to get things done. Leadership however, is about inspiration - creating a shared vision and leading people to achieve for both their organisation and themselves," said Steve Gregory, CEO of Black Bull Performance Group.

"I'd never say you had to have been a CEO to be able to effectively coach leaders, although from experience it certainly helps", he said.

"Our approach at Black Bull Performance Group, drawn from C Suite experience, science based tools and world class coaching training, is to first understand how we are wired for business.

"What are our own strengths, stretches and gaps? Then we build a road map to greater effectiveness. Working with board directors, business owners and executives we provide tangible results."

He also stated that in order to be able to grow others, you first need to understand yourself and your own impact on others.

Black Bull Performance Group offers one-on-one leadership and performance coaching, as well as consulting assignments for both governance and business improvement, plus behavioural profiling, and group masterclasses both virtually and face to face.
