Forty-seven years ago, 11-year-old Griffith pupil, Jane Smith, drafted a letter to the editor of The Canberra Times seeking "the whole lot of Section 36" and 71 of her classmates joined her in signing it. The letter stated her fellow pupils from Griffith, Red Hill, Narrabundah and Forrest would be going to Telopea Park High School the following year.

Jane had written the letter because she felt strongly against the development of a sports club being erected on the Section 36, Forrest site.

Her mother had helped her write the letter and her teacher allowed her to read it out to fellow pupils.

"One boy didn't sign because he is playing for the football club that wants the land," Jane said.

The principal of the Griffith school, Mr G. Hurrell, said he was not aware of the letter, and it had not been initiated by any of his staff.

A spokesperson for the Department of the Capital Territory had preliminary discussions with the president of the Eastern Suburbs Rugby Union Club, to persuade the club to forgo its rights to the site.

A Department of Education spokesperson said that the department would make a check of the school's needs.

The NCDC was "exploring an alternative club site".
