Our pick of what's happening in Canberra this weekend.
1. Jack Biilmann
Canberra-based indie-roots singer/songwriter Jack Biilmann launches his third studio album Full Circle this weekend. The record sees the blues and roots singer in his element, with tracks featuring his trademark honest, soaring lyrics and guitar mastery that wanders into folk, soul, Americana and soul territory. The performance will showcase new and old favourites, along with some personal reflections on life and legacy. Featuring special guests Hope Wilkins, Tom Dunlop and Steve Allen. Saturday, 7.30pm. The Street. Tickets are $30 from thestreet.org.au.
2. The Plunge
Do you have a story that you've been dying to share? It's time to take the plunge. Bring your warmest rug or comfiest milk crate and listen to your fellow Canberrans share their tales. This month's theme is "The Obsession". Those who are wanting to perform must send The Plunge a message on Facebook. People are urged to tell a tale where you were hooked, be it an idea, person or space. Saturday, from 3pm to 5.30pm. Inner north (the exact location will be emailed to ticketholders on the day). Tickets are $27 from Eventbrite.
3. Sophie Edwards
After spending the past few months performing interstate, Sophie Edwards is bringing her band back to Canberra as part of her new project She's on the Bill, which presents female/non-binary acts every month. Edwards had a busy 2020 after she was announced as a winner of two separate music mentorships - one with the Australian Independent Record Labels Association and musician Bec Sandridge, and the other with Ricochet MATES, led by producer Kristy Lee Peters. Edwards will be joined by folk-pop outfit Charlie Violet, Songbird Georgia Bennett and up-and-comer Tori Nikias. Sunday, 6.30pm. Sideway. Tickets are $16.91 from Eventbrite.
4. Harvest Stall
There is nothing like the taste of homemade jam, freshly made chutney and the scent of herbs. Made with organic produce from the National Arboretum's Kitchen Garden and with fruits from the forests, stock up on homemade goodies and seedlings and support the Friends of Arboretum. While you're there, visit the Kitchen Garden for inspiration of what can be grown in your backyard. Saturday, from 10am to 2pm. National Arboretum.
5. Canberra Roller Derby
With the 2020 season cancelled due to COVID, these skaters have been poised for battle for more than a year. The Canberra Roller Derby League's first bout for 2021 sees the Red Bellied Black Hearts take on the Black 'n' Blue Belles this weekend. Saturday, 6pm. Southern Cross Stadium.
