The 2021 Vinnies Winter Appeal is currently calling for donations to support the rising numbers of people, especially children, experiencing disadvantage in the community.

A year on from the biggest global crisis in recent memory, the hardship is increasing for many Canberrans.

The ongoing devastating impacts of COVID-19, combined with the recent cuts to the JobSeeker rate and the current housing crisis, are making it almost impossible for many struggling families to stay afloat.

As we enter the coldest time of the year, many families are facing the difficult decision of choosing whether to provide a meal for their children, pay their rent or pay their energy bill so they can stay warm.

Vinnies volunteers are being called upon more than ever to support families and young children in need.

"Children are often the most affected in these cases. When children are forced into homelessness, their safety, their education, their emotional and physical health are all suffering," said John Feint, President of the St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn.

"No child should have to wonder where they will sleep each night. Together, with your assistance, we can continue to make a big difference to the lives of the most vulnerable in our local community," said Mr Feint.

The St Vincent de Paul Society Canberra/Goulburn provides a vital service for individuals and families facing financial hardship. Our volunteers and members provide the emotional and financial assistance that struggling families need, to hang on to their tenancies and maintain a secure environment for their children.

By donating to the Winter Appeal, you can assist Vinnies to remove the threat of hunger from a child, provide warm blankets and clothing, pay the electricity bill to keep the heating on, and ensure a family experiencing or at risk of homelessness has a safe place to sleep.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

With temperatures dropping below zero overnight, Vinnies is also calling for donations of warm items, like jackets, blankets, sleeping bags and new socks to provide to those who visit the Night Patrol vans. These donations can be dropped at your local Vinnies shop.

Financial donations to the 2021 Vinnies Winter Appeal can be made at vinnies.org.au or by calling 13 18 12.
