The 154-capped Brumbies player will replace former Brumbies player Pat McCabe as the Rugby Union Players Association representative on the club's board of directors.
McCabe took on the role in 2017, before he stepped down and allowed Alexander to take over.
"Pat's about to have his third child so he's standing down and I'm very fortunate that I was asked to be involved," Alexander said.
"I care deeply about the club, it's future and the players who represent the Brumbies so to be able to be an advocate for them and a link between the current group and the board is an honour for me."
After retiring at the end of the 2018 season, he focused his energy on his role as a publican for The Dock in Kingston and launched his energy tracking app Alfred.
His new role will include being a voice to the board for the players and helping to solve any issues they raise.
MORE BRUMBIES NEWS:
The 36-year-old will be juggling his new duties with his businesses but said he was confident he could do all of them justice.
Alexander said he believed whilst the on-field tactics may change, the players still faced the same stuff off the field from his playing days.
"I will try and give the other board members an insight into some of the stuff that players face and the challenges they face and how the club can help them become the best players they can be," he said.
"I have got to spend a bit more time to understand the part of the club that I didn't see, so obviously I was part of the players, so I have a really good insight into the on field and the training part, but there's so much more to the club than that.
"Because I think any advice or anything that will help, you need to have the full picture of what the club's going through to try and help find the right path forward."
The club's board chairperson Matt Nobbs thanked McCabe for his efforts in the position for five years and said they were thrilled to welcome another former Brumby to the position.
"Ben is synonymous with the Brumbies in Canberra, someone our club and our fans recognise as not just a former great player, but a true Brumbies supporter as well," he said.
"Part of Ben's role will be to further strengthen the relationship between current and past players, hopefully leading in the establishment of an 'old boys/girls' weekend every year."
