The policy update came in response to increasing concern about the spread of COVID-19, and the implications of the spread of the new Delta variant.

With this new announcement comes a wave of new questions, particularly on the part of those who are unable to easily "check in".

ACT government advice is that if you don't have a smartphone or a compatible phone, ask a friend or relative to check you in as a guest using their app.

If this isn't possible, you can ask the business to check you in using the app's business profile.

When a business checks you in, they will ask for a name and phone number, which will be stored by ACT Health, and not retained by the business.

From July 1, Canberrans visiting any business, venues or events must now check in using the Check In CBR app.

Previously, people visiting a business, venue or event for under 15 minutes were not required to check in, but now the requirement exists regardless of the amount of time someone spends in a location.

This means customers must check in whenever possible.

From midday on Thursday, July 15, the rule will be expanded to become mandatory in all retail settings as well.

On public transport, having a registered MyWay card is acceptable if you do not have a phone to check in.

If you have no registered MyWay card or smartphone to check in, the government's policy is that keeping a good record of your travel is also appropriate.
