Prayers answered in a bag. On this day in 1976, The Canberra Times reported on a local priest who found $3,520 in a bag, in his Dickson backyard.

The priest had noticed the bag in his yard several weeks prior to this article but had not paid any attention to it. Eventually, curiosity finally got the better of him, he opened the bag.
The money was in used bank notes and in various denominations.
The head of the Criminal Investigation Division of the ACT police, Superintendent Charles Kent, said police were baffled because no one had come forward to claim it. Other state and territory police had been notified.
Meanwhile, it was a case of the lord giveth and the lord taketh away across town. Canberra's croquet courts, near the Old Hotel Canberra, the peaceful haven of women since 1927, was to be invaded by men.
The majority of the Canberra Croquet Club voted to admit men.
"We need a little more competitive sprit," president Phyllis Manning said.
Men would not be allowed to interfere with the tranquillity of the sport by drinking beer, or other activities usually conducted by sporting clubs.
"If they don't like just a cup of tea, they better not join," Mrs Manning said.
