But it could also benefit the Canberra Raiders' bid to play NRL finals.
Mitchell's facing a massive nine-week ban for his high shot that shattered his former Sydney Roosters teammate's cheekbone and eye socket, but he can reduce it to six with an early guilty plea.
His season's over unless he somehow manages to get cleared at the judiciary.
Manu underwent surgery on Saturday and could be out for 4-6 weeks - potentially ending his 2021 campaign as well.
He'll certainly miss the Raiders game in Mackay on Thursday night, which the Green Machine have to win to have a chance of making the top eight.
That's a massive blow for a Roosters team already decimated by injury - although they will welcome Angus Crichton back from suspension and enforcer Jared Waerea-Hargreaves could return from a knee injury.
But they could also be without prop Fletcher Baker, who was offered a one-game ban with an early guilty plea for a crusher tackle on Jai Arrow, and Siosiua Taukeiaho was unable to finish the loss to South Sydney due to a knee injury.
They're further blows to a depleted Roosters team that's somehow still in the running for the top four.
The Raiders have also been dealt an injury blow with winger Bailey Simonsson set to miss 1-2 weeks with a groin issue that forced him off in the win over the New Zealand Warriors.
Canberra will need to make the finals for Simonsson to play again.
Raiders coach Ricky Stuart has options to cover his absence - potentially starting Charnze Nicoll-Klokstad for the first time since undergoing neck surgery, shifting Jordan Rapana to the wing, or bringing in Semi Valemei, who's returning from a larynx injury.

Canberra prop Corey Horsburgh was expecting a tough contest against their 2019 grand final opponents - regardless of who runs out against them in Mackay.
"They're in the horrors this year. It looks like they've got a tough group that's still hanging in there winning games so probably not much changes for them," he said.
"We've just got to worry about ourselves and hold onto the ball. That's what we've got to do - not like [Friday night].
"We made a few crucial errors, but if we do that against the Roosters it will be a different story."
Roosters coach Trent Robinson's facing a fine from the NRL for his comments in the post-match press conference, where he was highly critical of referee Ashley Klein and bunker official Henry Perenara for failing to send off Mitchell.
Mitchell was instead given 10 minutes in the sin bin.
Robinson has reason to complain - given the bunker was quick to send off Josh Papalii and Corey Harawira-Naera earlier in the season for high shots that were nowhere near as dangerous as Mitchell's.
