The price of houses cost $6000 - or 20 per cent - more in July 1974 than 12 months prior. The average home cost $35,444.
This was $1374 higher than the June average, meaning the price of an average house grew by four per cent in one month.
The Canberra Times article on page 3 on this day said that the increase since July last year was despite the introduction of a new land system intended to make residential leases significantly cheaper in late 1973.
There were 40 fewer houses sold in July than June.
There were 243 houses sold in July. It was the second-lowest number of sales in any month of the past year.
The only month in which there were fewer property sales was January, when 203 houses were sold.
For the first time since the Department of the Capital Territory began supplying figures on sales, no houses were sold in July for $20,000 or less.
In July 1973, only 12 houses sold for less than $20,000. This was four per cent of all sales in that month.
About 71 per cent of houses in July 1974 cost $35,000 or less.
This is slightly less than the 74 per cent in this price range in June.
But there were a higher percentage of sales in this price range than in any other month of 1974.
